About This Novel

"Journey to the Center of the Earth" was published in 1864 and is one of Verne's early famous science fiction novels. The novel tells the story of an adventure trip through the center of the earth, inspired by a coded letter from the predecessor of German scientist Professor Lidenbrock, together with his nephew Axel and guide Hans. They descended from the Snæfellsjökull crater in Iceland and experienced three months of arduous trek in the center of the earth. They overcame difficulties such as lack of water, getting lost, and storms, and finally returned to the ground from the crater in Sicily. In the novel, Verne cleverly interspersed his knowledge with the plot and character descriptions of the novel. While describing a magical underground world to readers, showing a twists and turns, vivid and interesting plot, he also allowed readers to learn a wealth of scientific knowledge and feel the strong will of mankind to conquer nature.
