About This Novel
The story takes place in Moscow in the 19th century and tells the story of two daughters of a minister of state looking for love. During Christmas, thirteen-year-old Sonia Biroeva asked her maid to tell her fortune: the blurry appearance of her future husband was reflected in the mirror; however, the girl discovered that he was wearing a black bandage. The evil sister Lisa uses this to mock little Sonia. Meanwhile, both sisters compete for the attention of their cousin Sergey Voronov. Time flies, Sonia is sixteen years old, and she goes to Countess Preobrazhenskaya's ball for the first time; fully looking forward to meeting her cousin. At the dance, the sisters met a naval officer who was wearing a black bandage! But he was attracted to Lisa, and Sonia was deeply unhappy. To her surprise, another Baron named von Unger appeared. One of the Baron's eyes was also covered by a black bandage; was this the man who appeared in the mirror?
