Zijun: The aftermath of Nora's departure
When Lu Xun wrote "Sorrow", it was popular in society to praise love and freedom. Many people admired the running away of the heroine Nora in Ibsen's "A Doll's House", believing it to be a symbol of women's liberation and personal awakening. But when Lu Xun affirmed the significance of Nora's running away, he was also keenly aware of it and raised the question: What will happen after Nora runs away? No matter the society in which Nora lives, or the society in which Zijun lives in "Sorrow", there are no jobs for women, which means that they cannot obtain economic autonomy. Therefore, Lu Xun said in his speech "What happens after Nora leaves" that the key to women's liberation lies in economic independence, otherwise there are only two fates after running away: falling or coming back. The story of Zijun in this book is like a follow-up to Nora. After breaking through the obstacles and getting together with Juansheng, what greeted them was not the beautiful life they had imagined in the past where they talked about freedom, equality, poetry, and ideals. Instead, it was a depressing life where one was busy making money, the other was busy taking care of the housework, and was often gossiped about. And this life is getting worse day by day. Sometimes even eating becomes tense. Life problems, public opinion, economic oppression, employment problems, family conflicts, all come to mind one after another... After being forced to eat the chicken and abandoning the puppy Asui, Zijun himself also became darker day by day, and finally chose to go home with his father (later died for unknown reasons). This work is relatively short, but the truth revealed is very profound. Zijun's tragedy also has profound typical significance, such as thinking about the issue of women's liberation - without social reform, it is difficult for women to pursue personal happiness.
