About This Novel
There are twenty-four volumes of "Zi Buyu" and ten volumes of "Sequel to Zi Buyu", totaling thirty-four volumes, collecting more than 1,200 short stories. Yuan Mei's first sentence in "Zi Buyu·Preface" is: "Strangeness, power, chaos, and gods are what Zi Buyu said." This is actually a comment on the title of the book, that is, the author talks about "weirdness, courage, chaos, ghosts and gods". His imagination is strange, his language is witty and refined, and it is interesting to read. "Zi Buyu" is full of bizarre stories about reincarnation, unjust ghosts demanding lives, and evil ghosts causing troubles; images of various gods and ghosts such as city gods, land, wronged ghosts, and slaves can be seen everywhere. There are only a few stories that do not involve ghosts and gods at all, and most of them promote the superstitious ideas of "karma" and fate. Yuan Mei uses these images of gods and ghosts and weird stories to show readers a complete underworld society.
