About This Novel

During the Spanish Civil War, an American young man, Robert Jordan, volunteered to join the Spanish government army and engage in explosive activities behind enemy lines. In order to cooperate with the counterattack, he was ordered to contact the local guerrillas in the mountainous area and carry out a bridge bombing mission. Although repeatedly obstructed by Pablo, the guerrilla captain who had lost his fighting spirit, Robert still won the support of Pablo's wife Pilar and other team members, and fell in love with Maria, a girl who had been raped by the enemy. In just three days, Robert experienced the conflict between love and duty and the test of life and death, and his humanity continued to sublimate. After successfully blowing up the bridge, Robert was unfortunately injured. In order to cover the safe retreat of others, he chose to stay alone to stop the enemy, and ultimately gave his young life for the Spanish people. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was published in 1940 and is one of Hemingway's most widely circulated novels.
