This book is Lin Yutang's autobiographical novel. The prototype of Lai Boying is the author's first love. Silla and Lai Boying were childhood sweethearts, and developed a deep love affair when they grew up. Lai Boying was unable to go abroad with Xinluo for various reasons. Xinluo's deep yearning for his first love in a foreign country often made him unable to leave. The uncle's concubine fell in love with him absurdly, but failed in the end; Mrs. Wu's daughter pursued him hard, and finally committed suicide after failing. In confusion, Xinluo fell in love with the beautiful mixed-race girl Han Qin and fell madly in love with her. Later, Han Qin was influenced by a prostitute and pursued the sensuality and money of European men. After experiencing a series of mental struggles such as lovesickness, crazy love, lovelorn, and distress, Silla finally reunited with Lai Boying and regained the beauty of the past.
