This book tells the story of the struggle for the throne between Zhu Di and Zhu Yunwen in the late Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. The story is connected by a kind of "Jingcao" with a sworn meaning. The plot is twists and turns, including fictional characters and stories, as well as historical figures and events. An accidental opportunity brought Zhu Di together with He Fugui, a failed candidate, and Gou Sheng'er, a local ruffian, and they became brothers, thus starting the struggle between the three brothers to seize the throne. Among them, the King of Yan, Zhu Di, was cunning and vicious. He took advantage of his sworn brothers and various forces in the court and society to work for him. When he finally learned that the little emperor was his illegitimate son, he still strangled the little emperor's mother, the empress dowager, to death, revealing the inhumanity of the feudal rulers for the sake of the throne. The structure of the book is tight and compact, the plot is full of twists and turns, the language is popular and vernacular, and the story unfolds in the style of a classical literary chapter novel, with ups and downs and a thought-provoking ending, making it highly readable and enlightening.
