About This Novel
Carrie, an 18-year-old country girl, took a train to Chicago to find a better life. She met salesman Duluwe on the train. After arriving in Chicago, she couldn't bear the hard life in the factory, so she lived with Duluwe and met the hotel manager Hurst Wood through him. Hurstwood became obsessed with her and the two became lovers. Hurstwood's affair with a woman outside aroused his wife's suspicion, and his wife wanted to retaliate against him by divorcing him. In order to get Carrie completely, Hurstwood stole 10,000 yuan in cash from the hotel cabinet and eloped with Carrie. After settling in New York, Hurstwood was unable to be as successful as before, and his situation became worse and worse. He fell into unemployment and eventually became a beggar and committed suicide; while Carrie left him after getting an acting job in the theater and became a popular actor, but she was not happy.

I first came across this book when I read it in the school library. It was very good.
It tells how a simple and beautiful soul was destroyed during the primitive accumulation stage of capitalism. It is especially suitable for the current Chinese people to read.
The times are sad, high-end luxury is lonely
