About This Novel
"The Fifth Column" is set against the backdrop of the Battle of Madrid. At that time, a Spanish rebel general threatened to have four columns to besiege Madrid. At the same time, a group of sympathizers in the city would cooperate with the troops inside and outside. He named this the fifth column. The protagonist, an American reporter, helps the Spanish government forces in their counter-revolutionary work, sneaks into enemy reconnaissance posts, and captures spies and brings them to justice. His girlfriend is a somewhat cynical American college student who came to Spain to report on the war. The play also features German anti-fascist fighters, leaders of the Spanish government security agency and a black prostitute, and scenes of live drama are staged in the Florida hotel. "Spanish Land" is a documentary filmed on location jointly by Dutch directors Evans and Hemingway, with Hemingway writing the caption.
