About This Novel

This book is one of Pushkin's most famous masterpieces and the first realist work in the history of Russian literature that reflects the struggle of peasants. It was praised by Gogol as "Russia's best narrative work" and occupies an unshakable position in the history of Russian and even world literature. It has been translated into more than 100 languages and remains a best-seller to this day. In 1903, it was translated into China and became the earliest Russian literary work to be translated into China. The novel is based on the Pugachev Uprising in the 18th century. Griniov, a noble young man, met Pugachev by chance in a snowstorm and later fell in love with the daughter of the fortress commander. Soon the fortress was captured by Pugachev. Pugachev released Griniov because of his old friendship and fulfilled his marriage.
