There is No Past in the Bad Years
by Xue Yanping
About This Novel
"The Past" is a novel that exudes a strong flavor of life and the local characteristics of Beijing's Hutongs. It is an "original" image of Beijing! During the famine years, when materials were scarce, Lu Zhongxiang opened a small wine shop in his courtyard, which became the center of the alley, and thus began the love-hate relationships of various little people. Although the background of the story is in the 1960s, the focus of the story is the lives of ordinary people in the hutong. The author downplays the special political environment of that era and focuses more on the daily life of the people at the bottom. This book describes not only the nooks and crannies of Beijing's old city, but also the various aspects of life in Beijing's courtyard houses.
