About This Novel
"1993" is the last novel by Victor Hugo, the French romantic master who is renowned in the world of literature. In the novel, Hugo created three central characters: the Marquis de Landenac, the leader of the Vendée rebels, his grandnephew, Guo Wan, the commander of the Republican Army who suppressed the rebellion, and Simourdan, Guo Wan's tutor and commissioner of the Public Security Commission. An intricate plot unfolded around them, vividly describing the life-and-death struggle between the bourgeoisie and feudal forces. At the end of the novel: Landenac discovered his conscience and returned to the burning castle to rescue the three children. Guo Wan was moved by his uncle's humanitarian spirit and was willing to trade his own head for Landenac's life. Simourdan shot himself while Guo Wan's head fell to the ground. The translator is Zheng Yonghui, a famous Chinese translator. His ancestral home is Xiangshan, Guangdong (now Zhongshan), and he was born in Haiphong, Vietnam. Graduated from the Law Department of Shanghai Aurora University Law School in 1942. He has taught at Aurora University, Aurora Women's College of Arts and Sciences, and Beijing Institute of International Relations. He has translated more than 40 works including "The Laughing Man", "The Schuang Party", "Donkey Skin", "Antiquities Showroom", "1993", "Nana", "Mrs. Monsolo", "Our Love" and "The Crypt of the Vatican".
