This novel is based on the funeral reform in Shihu Village, reflecting the difficult process of funeral reform in villages and towns and the psychological changes of some elderly people facing the funeral reform. In the novel, the elderly people such as Lao Ba, Lao Zhuang, Lianbang, and Guigang all showed varying degrees of reaction and resistance to the funeral reform.
