About This Novel

This book was first published in 1949 and contains nearly 400 pictures. It systematically discusses the artistic characteristics and development of Chinese gardens. It is recognized worldwide as the pioneering work in the study of Chinese gardens. In 1921, Xilongren received a special permission from the President of the Republic of China and became one of the few foreign scholars allowed to enter Zhongnanhai, Beihai, the Summer Palace and other places where the Republic of China government was located for inspection and photography. After that, he visited and photographed private gardens in Suzhou, Hangzhou and other places. And with the support of collections at home and abroad such as the Freer Museum of Art, he photographed a large number of famous paintings of Chinese gardens. Most of these gardens were destroyed by war or man-made destruction. Thanks to the pictures taken by Xilongren with great pains, we can get a glimpse of the old style. In addition, 60 rare photos of Prince Chun Yixuan's residence are appended, which are printed for the first time in China.
