About This Novel
The novel narrates the tragedy of the life of rural young Jude in a tragic tone. Jude was diligent and studious, but was rejected by the university because of his poor background. He broke through the shackles of religion, regardless of worldly views, and firmly married his cousin Sue. However, he was not tolerated by the church and despised by the world. In the end, his love and dreams were shattered, and he died of illness in despair and loneliness. This work reflects the moral and religious prejudices of ordinary poor people represented by Jude as a typical representative, as well as the social tragedy under the legal and educational systems at that time. It effectively attacks the moral concepts and marriage system of the Victorian era, and has far-reaching significance.
