About This Novel
The novel describes Grandet's family life - the cunning, greedy, stingy and cruel upstart father Grandet, his daughter Eugenie who longs for love but is indifferent to money, and Eugenie's cousin Charles, a vain, cruel and greedy Parisian swinger. It revolves around Eugenie's love tragedy and tells a story about how money destroys humanity and causes family tragedy. This book is "one of the most outstanding pictures" in the "Human Comedy" series by French critical realist writer Balzac. Grandet is one of the four classic images of a miser in the history of world literature.
