About This Novel

"An American Tragedy" makes a strong and painful indictment of capitalist society through the emergence and disillusionment of Clyde's "American Dream", the formation and development of his egoistic outlook on life and hedonistic thoughts, and his depression, struggle, degradation and destruction. This tragedy is not so much a tragedy of personality and humanity as it is a tragedy of an era and country based on egoism.

Clyde Griffiths and Dreiser

This book has tragic thoughts and naturalistic colors. I further realized that the reality in the United States is a "cruel and unfair reality" and a "process of destruction, and happiness is just an illusion." When I wanted to talk about the pain of the poor and the oppression they suffered, I was laughed at. So I gave up my job as a journalist and started writing.

Sandra's sympathy, Robert's parents' outrage and comfort

Sandra must have been in pain after the arrest of Clyde Griffiths and even during the trial. As the novel describes, her worldview has completely changed. Her life is full of happiness and vanity, but now she has to be stabbed heavily by the one she loves. , She loved him, and I thought the ending would be unexpected, but it turned out to be the opposite of what I thought. Yes, I forgot the background of the author's birth and his indignation about the gap between rich and poor. Just like the ending, the hope is slim, which is not enough to support the review of human nature, just like Christianity. First of all, when I first read this book, I had a deep sense of involvement and sympathy for Clyde Griffiths. Just like the lonely and poor Clyde who didn't know where he would go in the future, he wanted to get ahead and desperately climbed to the top. I don't think this character is tragic, but successful. The protagonist
