About This Novel

This book was co-written by foreign journalist Pu Lande and Chinese linguist Backhouse. It is a historical biography book that records the major historical events in the late Qing Dynasty and the most controversial in history, Cixi, the actual first ruler in the late Qing Dynasty. It is also one of the few books written by foreigners to record Cixi. This book reflects foreigners' attitudes and views on the historical events of the Qing Dynasty and Cixi's rulers. The author Backhouse used the palace archives and collaborated with Purland to complete this book. The two authors were both contemporaries of Cixi, and the facts they rely on are all from palace archives and the private diaries of the Queen Mother's housekeeper. They tell the ins and outs of major historical events in the Qing Dynasty, comprehensively describing Cixi's boyhood, fleeing north with Emperor Xianfeng, dealing with the eight ministers Gu Ming, turning against Prince Gong, the 1898 Coup, the Xinchou Incident, and many other major historical events. They tell the story of Cixi's legendary life and reveal the unknown side of Cixi to the world.
