About This Novel
"Roots" is a family epic novel based on the hundreds of years of changes in the Liu family. The novel continues the spiritual thread of "farming, reading, inheriting the family, and establishing one's family with integrity" in the family tree. By telling the ups and downs of Liu Chengye's family from the war years to contemporary society, it shows the perseverance and inheritance of an ordinary family in the tide of the times. The story begins at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. The ancestors of the Liu family were forced to move from the county to the remote Liujiawan due to war, and since then they have taken root in this piece of yellow land. The novel takes Liu Chengye's growth as the main line, and delicately depicts his complete life from a farm boy who was forced to drop out of school, to joining the army to serve the country, being discharged and returning to the fields, and finally becoming a famous carpenter in the village and the spiritual pillar of the family. At the same time, the novel also depicts Liu Chengzhi's dedicated life of adhering to rural education for more than thirty years, and Liu Xingbang's struggle from a construction worker to an entrepreneur. In terms of literary expression, "Roots" focuses on the in-depth portrayal of the characters' appearance and personality, and outlines the unique image of each character through delicate brushstrokes: Liu Chengye's weathered but resolute face, Liu Chengzhi's lean and elegant scholar demeanor, Liu Xingbang's rugged and bold temperament with a shrewd entrepreneur, and the gentleness and tenacity of many female characters. The novel cleverly interweaves the micro-narrative of the family's destiny with the grand background of the changes of the times. While telling personal and family stories, it also reflects the magnificent transformation of Chinese society from traditional farming civilization to modern industrial civilization. This work is not only a family history, but also a profound ode about land, inheritance, and the glory of human nature.
