About This Novel

Gao Xizeng (1921-1980), courtesy name Yinfu, was born in Shaoxing and was born into a scholarly family in Beijing. He studied in the Chinese Department of Fu Jen Catholic University in Peking, where he studied under Sun He, Gu Sui, Zhao Wanli and others. He taught at Tsinghua University, Hebei University and other schools, and has profound attainments in ancient Chinese literature, editions, and bibliography. This book selects 23 academic papers by Mr. Gao Xizeng and organizes them into five parts: Poetry, Ci, Music, Novels and Miscellaneous Essays. Some have been published publicly, some are lecture notes given during the year, and some are compiled from manuscripts. The main works of writers analyzed include Du Fu, Liu Yong, Su Shi, Xin Qiji, Li Qingzhao, "The Book of Songs", "The Injustice of Dou E", "Wangjiang Pavilion", "Journey to the West", etc. There are also many postscripts and miscellaneous talks.
