About This Novel
"Persuasion" is Austen's last novel, telling a tortuous love story. The aristocratic lady Anne Elliot fell in love with the young officer Wentworth and entered into a marriage contract. However, her father, Sir Walter, and godmother, Lady Russell, thought Wentworth was of humble origin and had no property, and strongly opposed the marriage. Out of caution, Anne accepted her godmother's advice and reluctantly broke off the engagement with her sweetheart. Eight years later, Colonel Wentworth, who had been promoted and made a fortune during the war, retired from service and returned to his hometown. Although he was still resentful of Anne, the two did not forget their old feelings and finally went through twists and turns and formed a good relationship.
