About This Novel

This novel tells the tortuous love story between Luoxia, a woman with a new education, and Jiang Qiuyu, a revolutionary young man, in the early years of the Republic of China. Although Luoxia has a rough life, she pursues independence and happiness. Her union with Jiang Qiuyu breaks the traditional concept of family status. The title of the book is taken from Wang Bo's "Preface to Prince Teng's Pavilion" "The falling clouds and the solitary owl fly together, the autumn water is the same color as the sky". The artistic conception is beautiful and slightly sentimental, hinting at the fate and emotions of the protagonist. The work reflects the changes in social concepts after the Revolution of 1911, and praises the hero and heroine's pursuit of free love and revolutionary ideals. It is one of the representative works of Zhang Henshui's early social romance novels.
