About This Novel

The novel is set in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, and tells a love tragedy that took place in an old school. Young teacher Li Xiaoxia fell in love with female student Xiaoqiu (Yao Chunhua), but was cruelly obstructed by feudal ethics and family. The work profoundly criticizes the destruction of the beautiful emotions of young men and women by arranged marriages, the feudal imperial examination system, and such stereotypes as "men and women are not intimate with each other". The title of the book "Northern Wild Geese Flying South" symbolizes farewell and lovesickness, and is full of sadness. The story is delicate and touching, and the depiction of the old education system and rural customs is very realistic. It is one of Zhang Henshui's social romance novels with a stronger color of critical realism.
