About This Novel

This is Zhang Henshui's later novel with a strong autobiographical color and summary meaning. The story is set in Chongqing during the Anti-Japanese War. Through the life of the protagonist Li Nanquan's family and his neighbors taking refuge in a mountain village, the story describes the living conditions, inner depression and tenacity of ordinary intellectuals in the war and chaos. The title of the book is taken from Li Shangyin's poem "How can we cut candles from the western window together and talk about the night rain in Bashan?" The book is full of deep thoughts on life, family, and country in the continuous night rain. The writing is concise, the artistic conception is desolate, and the art is mature. It is considered one of his best works.
