About This Novel

"Journey to the West" is based on Xuanzang's journey to the west in the Tang Dynasty to seek Buddhist scriptures. It tells the story of Tang Monk who was enlightened by Guanyin and led Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Monk and White Dragon Horse to go through ninety-nine and eighty-one difficulties to obtain the true scriptures. The whole book revolves around the main line of subduing demons, and through classic plots such as causing havoc in heaven and three fights with white-bone demons, it shows the growth process of the four masters and apprentices in breaking through inner demons and transcending themselves in practice. The work combines Buddhist philosophy and folklore, not only praising the spirit of freedom and resistance, but also exploring the dialectical relationship between rules and compassion. It has shaped Sun Wukong, an eternal cultural symbol, and has become the pinnacle of Chinese classical literature that emphasizes both imagination and philosophy.
