About This Novel

"Mudbound" is a novel about the American South. In the novel, Laura Schaper, a middle-class girl who grew up in the city, marries Henry McCarran, who yearns for plantations and creates wealth on the land with the work of his hands, in order to escape the fate of dying alone. Henry moved his family from Memphis, Tennessee to the Mississippi Delta in order to realize his farm dream. Facing the endless cotton fields, Laura felt that she was imprisoned in this realm of earth. Also feeling out of place and unable to integrate with the land are Jamie, who has just returned from the battlefield of World War II, and Ronsel, the son of a black farmer. The shared post-war trauma brought them a friendship that transcended racial boundaries, but it also led to tragedy. Finally, in a storm, all the suffering and hatred, depression and forbearance broke out, and rain, mud, blood and tears intertwined...
