About This Novel

Ten years ago, Harold, a sixty-five-year-old winery salesman, left home one morning and walked 627 miles to visit his friend Queenie, who was at the end of her life. His wife Maureen also went through a journey, but it was not the heroic journey that Harold is so talked about. She is always at home. While Harold walks across England to save a woman he once worked with, Maureen is at home cleaning the kitchen sink. Today, he is seventy-five and she is seventy-two. Over the years, she thought she had dealt with the past, but there were times recently when she hated the world because the people she loved most were taken away. That man was her son David, who would have been fifty years old this year if he were still alive. Her past self turned into a cage, trapping her and unable to enjoy the happiness that was so close at hand. Harold understands everything. He looked at her pain and knew she needed her own pilgrimage. "Let's go now. Let's go." He pushed her. Maureen picked up her shoes and quietly closed the bedroom door behind her. If she doesn't leave now, she may never be able to leave. She walked towards the garden Queenie had built by the sea before her death, where a secret about David was buried. She was going to find her own answer.
