About This Novel
In 1958, Maugham said in an interview that "Joy" was his most proud and favorite novel. He changed the prejudice against women in his previous works and recalled the life of a beautiful woman as an admirer, embellished with many anecdotes from the literary and artistic circles. After the great writer Driefeld died, his wife asked someone to write a biography of him. The narrator of the novel, Ashenden, was invited by the biographer to recall his interactions with the writer. The story unfolds from there. In the depths of Ashenden's memory, we discover the writer's ex-wife, the charming Rosie. She was romantic by nature, merciless at all times, but yet kind, frank and lovely... In "Pleasure", Maugham drew materials from reality, blended fiction and reality, and used the narrator Ashenden to narrate his early relationship with the famous writer Driffield and his ex-wife Rosie. This past event is the biographical subject that another popular novelist Gere wants to explore. Readers can vaguely recognize that Driffield is alluding to Hardy, Gere is based on Hugh Walpole, and Rosie is clearly a replica of Joyce's Molly Bloom.
