About This Novel
In 1685, King Charles II died without warning, and his younger brother James II succeeded to the throne. He was the first Catholic king of England since the time of Bloody Mary. Protestant England was threatened, and King Charles' illegitimate son, the handsome Duke of Monmouth, launched an armed rebellion in an attempt to overthrow his uncle's regime. This riot completely overturned the world of young Ann Carter. She was eighteen and engaged to Tom Goodchild, a Protestant shoemaker; but she was secretly in love with Robert Pole, an officer in King James' army who had promised to take her to London to be his mistress.
