About This Novel

"The Long Goodbye" is Raymond Chandler's most important novel. The protagonist Marlowe has many projections of the author's own consciousness. The novel tells the story of private detective Marlowe who meets drunken Terry Lennox and becomes friends with whom he occasionally drinks quietly. Terry Lennox is not old but has white hair and scars on half of his face. Although he is extremely depressed, he behaves very well-educated. One day, this gentleman drunkard came to Marlowe, claiming to have killed his wife, and asked him to help him escape... The story revolves around a love-murder case that everyone in New York's upper class is trying to cover up, but Marlowe is the only one trying to track it down. The underworld, the political circles and the police have staged scenes of complex dramas, depicting a reflection of the city full of coldness, darkness, violence, and desire. As the truth approached, Marlowe realized that from the day he was involved in this bizarre case, he had been saying a long goodbye in the double betrayal of friendship and love.
