My Body Fifty Years
by Zhang Li
About This Novel
When I was in the third grade of Mingde Primary School in Xiaguan, I happened to catch up with the three-year difficult period in the 1960s, and I was so hungry that I felt dizzy all day long. The food supplied by the state was not enough, and almost everything edible inside and outside the small town was eaten, including leaves, bark, grass roots and even a kind of white mud called Guanyin soil. I still remember the taste of Guanyin soil. It is slightly astringent and sticky in the mouth. You can't take it out after eating it. It gives your intestines and stomach a feeling of fullness that everything is ready for me. Many people die silently in this happy feeling of fullness. The dead man was as skinny as a stick, his belly swollen like a translucent balloon, and his green intestines could be seen inside, lying silently in the bright sunshine. At that time, I was young and ignorant. I was only worried that his belly would be burned in the sun, but I didn't know that he had lost his life. But the belly of the living must be filled.
