About This Novel
There was a girl named Thrush who was sickly and had a perverse personality. The three cousins spent their summers in a quiet seaside town and grew up unknowingly. Although each has his or her own troubles and happiness, the days spent together are always peaceful and stable. Maria, cousins Thrush and Yoko grew up together and have a deep relationship. That summer, Maria, who grew up and went to college in Tokyo, returned to the seaside town for vacation. A cheerful and sunny boy named Kyouichi suddenly broke into the peaceful lives of the three girls, and pure love developed between Thrush and Kyouichi. A group of delinquent boys who had a crush on Thrush took the opportunity to beat Kyouichi up, and then killed Thrush's pet dog. In order to take revenge, Thrush tried his best to dig a big trap without telling everyone, and he fell ill and was hospitalized. Banana Yoshimoto uses her unique rhythm and language to describe the splendid season that girls only have once in their lives and will never return to, and composes a glorious and endlessly transparent prelude to summer love.
