This book is one of Zhang Henshui's masterpieces. It mainly describes the love tragedy between Fan Jiashu, a Jiangnan college student who lives in Peiping, and Shen Fengxi, a girl who sings drums in Tianqiao. It also intersperses the story of the noble lady He Lina's unremitting pursuit of Fan Jiashu, the secret love of Guan Shoufeng's daughter Xiugu who makes a living for Fan Jiashu, the warlord Liu Dezhu's dominance of civilian girls, and the heroic and righteous Guan father and daughter hoeing the strong and supporting the weak. The book has a twists and turns, distinctive characters, and a strong flavor of Beijing. After its publication, the book became very expensive in Luoyang.
