About This Novel

A woman's forty years of affection and love, a city's forty years of stability and change. The winning work of the 5th Mao Dun Literary Award, Asia Weekly's top 100 Chinese novels of the 20th century, and the most influential Chinese work in the 1990s. "Song of Everlasting Regret" tells the life story of a Shanghai woman named Wang Qiyao. From her debut as a "Shanghai socialite" to her embarrassing ending when she was murdered, she seemed to be on a lively dance floor. Under the urging of the gorgeous dance steps, she briefly met and separated from the people around her. She struggled to hold on to the last support but lost her life, and the attempt was in vain. What always accompanies the changes in her destiny are the changes in the city of Shanghai. The span of forty years is enough for a city to undergo earth-shaking changes. It seems that the alleys cannot accommodate this behemoth, but its tentacles have already sneaked into every corner of Wang Qiyao's life, tightly binding her.

I will be a sophomore in high school soon, and I don't know where I can reach in two years. I have always been what the teacher calls a child who works very hard but has no method. I work hard to find methods and make summaries, even if there is no regular Chinese language. There is no longer the joy of learning and the indifferent attitude of not seeking deeper understanding. I am very tired, my heart is tired. I'm very glad that I watched Teacher Wang Anyi's Song of Everlasting Regret today, which made me appreciate again the beauty of savoring it word for word, carefully, and the quiet flow of time. I feel relieved, there is no need to be nervous, the sense of joy of growing up in the process is much more important than the result...

Time just flies, so let it pass. You may have been here a second ago, wondering what you will be like when you grow up? The next second you start to miss your time as a child. This is human. When you were a child, you thought about growing up. When you grow up, you think about your childhood again.

If everyone around the heroine leaves and she dies alone, it would be better to end like this.

The portrayal of the character's psychology and detailed descriptions are very good and full of emotions.

Rumors are always base. It has a vulgar heart, and it is inevitable that it is willing to be humble. It is the water in the sewer, which has been used and polluted by people. It's the kind that doesn't have a clear conscience and can only chatter behind its back.
