About This Novel

The novel is based on the author's life in his youth, and makes a profound exploration of family relationships through the depiction of the love between mother and child and lovers. My mother was originally a well-educated woman, but she married a miner with a low level of education. The heavy labor made the husband often drink alcohol, and the couple had long-term discord. The mother devoted all her emotions to her sons, especially her second son Paul. She did her best to make up for the fault of bringing him into the world without love. Abnormal maternal love made Paul unable to escape from emotional confusion in his relationships with other women.
