The Northern Drift Trilogy
by Qian Hong
About This Novel
The three novellas of "Beidiao Trilogy" use the technique of mystery novels to reflect the ups and downs of contemporary Chinese youths who are drifting from Beijing. "In a Thought" tells the absurd encounter of four young people who came to Beijing, and depicts the struggle and resistance of "Beijing drifters" when they face the challenges of fate under the background of the times. The protagonists in "Qiyu Old Library" are another kind of northern drifters. They are full of ideals, smart and diligent, and have achieved certain success in their struggles. But reality is often crueler than imagined, and the protagonist's adventures hint at the blows and growth experienced by such young people. "Game of Love" describes another type of North drifters who have stable jobs, nothing to do, and no long-term future in sight. They may do some things they think are meaningful when they are bored, but are these seemingly good things really good things? The experiences of the protagonist of the novel will tell us the answer.
