Goethe (1749-1832), a German literary giant. "The Sorrows of Young Werther" is his most important early work. This is an epistolary novel, and the author was only twenty-five years old when he wrote it. The novel describes the experiences and feelings of progressive young people towards the despicable German society at that time, and expresses the author's reaction to the feudal moral hierarchy and his strong demand for individual liberation.
