About This Novel
An epic of ordinary people, a hidden history of a country. This book focuses on Bulgarian history, and what begins as a mystery soon develops into a symbol of the hidden history of the entire country. When the 28-year-old American girl Alexandra arrived in Sophie, the capital of Bulgaria, she met three people waiting for a taxi, an old woman in a wheelchair, an elderly man with gray hair, and a middle-aged man. Alexandra stepped forward to help, but after seeing them off, she discovered that they had left behind an urn with the words "Stoyan Latorov (1915-2006)" engraved on it. After going to the police station to find the owner without success, Alexandra embarked on a long search journey in order to return the urn to its original owner. He was often taken to the police station for questioning, and after a police raid, he was arrested and sent to a labor camp, losing contact with his family. In the labor camp, Stoyan experienced despair, pain and longing for his wife and children, and remained silent all day long. He spent four difficult years and finally received the day he was sent home. Even when he returned to his family in Sofia, Stoyan was often called to the police station for questioning. In his twilight years, Stoyan was reading a newspaper one day and discovered that the caretaker Lao Mo, whom he met in the labor camp, had changed his identity, changed his name, and slowly turned into a successful businessman and politician...
