About This Novel

The plot of Cleopatra focuses on the final moments of Cleopatra and Antony's lives. They were in dire straits. Augustus promised each of them that whoever sacrificed the other would receive one-third of the empire or corresponding power. Cleopatra took the lead in planning Antony's death. However, when she saw through Augustus's guarantee that it was just an illusion, and he just wanted her to accompany him in triumph to Rome as a trophy, she disrupted his plan until she died heroically: "If a monarch dies before the country is destroyed, he must die great."
