About This Novel

"Constantine the Great" was created when Leopold I was crowned German Emperor. It was an imperial drama staged for the Vienna court and rulers. It was based on the story of the ancient Roman Emperor Constantine's victory over the pagan tyrant Maxentius. It can be said that although this drama tells history, it focuses on reality. The two groups of characters in the play are divided by Christianity, and they are in black and white opposition to each other and are clearly divided: Constantine the Great and Maxentius, justice and injustice, monarch and tyrant... "Constantine the Great" has obvious practical significance. The tense situation between the Habsburg Empire and Ottoman Turkey at that time is vaguely visible in the play. At the same time, Avancini uses Constantine's achievements because of his piety as a metaphor for the Habsburg Empire's continuous blessings due to his Catholic faith. Its political education purpose is clear at a glance.
