The Slaughtered King (Western Tradition: Classics and Interpretations)
About This Novel
In 1649, King Charles I of Great Britain was executed, causing an uproar in European politics and overwhelming public opinion in German politics. Shortly thereafter, Gryphius composed The Slaughtered King. The drama begins at midnight and ends at three o'clock in the afternoon. In less than a day of drama, Lady Fairfax and others tried to rescue the king, while rebels sought a flawless execution. Representatives of various political forces commented on the current situation and expressed their opinions, and the souls of past British kings lamented the world and predicted the future. In the midst of panic, the protagonist of the play, Charles I, was independent, upright and calm, just like Christ Jesus who was generously martyred and finally "turned the heavy crown of thorns in the world into an immortal crown of honor."
