The author Wu Cheng'en (about 1500-about 1582) was born in the Ming Dynasty. His courtesy name was Ruzhong and his nickname was Sheyangshanren. He was a native of Shanyang (now Huai'an, Jiangsu). He created this world-famous mythological novel based on folklore, storybooks and dramas. "Journey to the West" is a representative work of ancient Chinese romantic novels. It is full of the author's fantastic fantasies. It is also a new category of novels about gods and demons. It has a milestone significance in the development history of Chinese novels. "Journey to the West" has a total of one hundred chapters. It narrates the whole process of Monk Tang's journey to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. On the way, he successively accepted three disciples, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Monk Sha. After going through ninety-nine and eighty-one difficulties, he finally obtained the true scriptures and achieved enlightenment. The author creates a magical and gorgeous mythical world and vivid characters, gods and demons. The characters in the work have a wide range of activities, in the sky and on the earth, in the dragon palace and the underworld. They can fully display their superhuman abilities without restraint. There are four main characters in the book: Tang Monk, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Monk Sha. Sun Wukong is the main character portrayed by the author. He slays monsters and eliminates monsters on his way to protect Xuanzang's Buddhist scriptures. He is not afraid of hardships and dangers, and moves forward bravely. He has a positive and optimistic fighting spirit and superb fighting art. He fought against the supreme Jade Emperor and won the reputation of "Monkey King"; he fought against demons and ghosts, his fiery eyes never let go of a monster; he fought against all hardships without bowing his head and shrinking back. Tang Seng is a character with a strong feudal temperament. He abides by religious creeds and feudal ethics. He is very pedantic, soft-hearted, timid and cowardly. Zhu Bajie is honest and simple, but sometimes greedy and lazy. He is a flawed but endearing comic character. Monk Sha is always hard-working and looks like an old scalper.
