Confrontation in the Cicada's Chirping
by Luo Xintian
About This Novel
Yuying Middle School is located in the old town on the edge of the city. The camphor trees in the school are decades old, and their leafy canopy covers almost half of the playground. The teaching building is a slightly old red brick building. The walls are covered with ivy. It becomes lush and green every summer. Together with the endless chirping of cicadas outside the window, it forms a unique mark of this place. The school's student base is not pure. Half of them are local students like Yun Shu who have passed the college entrance examination with excellent results and have a clear goal - to get out of the old city through the college entrance examination and go to a wider world; the other half are children from well-off families but mediocre academic performance. Most of their parents are bosses in the surrounding emerging business districts. They spend money to send their children to this school that is not top-notch but close to home. They rarely care about their studies. Ling Yao is one of them. This difference is like an invisible line dividing the two worlds on campus. The "Academic Dominance Zone" represented by Class 1 of Senior Grade 3 is always filled with the tense atmosphere of answering questions and memorizing. The stacks of test papers on the desks are taller than people, and even the discussions during class are "three solutions to the last math problem." The "Free Zone" represented by Class 9 is full of slapstick and carelessness. Their desks are often empty, or there are comics and game consoles that have nothing to do with textbooks. The sycamore forest behind the teaching building is a natural "three no matter" zone. The light there is dim and there is a layer of dead leaves falling all year round. It is the secret base of Ling Yao and his friends...
