The Third Bank of the River
by (brazil)joao Guimarães Rosa
About This Novel
Rosa's short story "The Third Bank of the River" is widely read in China. This short story has profoundly influenced several generations of Chinese writers and was listed by the writer Yu Hua as one of the "novels that influenced my life". Almost all of Rosa's novels are set in the northeastern hinterland of Brazil, which is full of mountains, river valleys, deep ravines, swamps, and wastelands. The terrain is ever-changing and mysterious. The father who never goes ashore, the quixotic vengeful old man, the little girl with miraculous prophecy, the madman who climbs to the top of the palm tree to trigger a violent revolution, the bandit brothers, the bloodthirsty Indian who merges with the wild leopard... The characters have distinct hinterland characteristics, and their fates are full of magic and absurdity. Rosa not only pays attention to people's real situation and explores the mysteries of daily life, but also has profound insights into existentialism and the essence of human beings. Rosa was fluent in more than 20 languages, and was influenced by popular slang and dialects, and eruditely created a large number of new words and grammar. The translator selected 19 novels from four collections of novels published by Rosa at the peak of her writing, which comprehensively demonstrated the creative style of Rosa's short stories. This book is a version officially funded by the National Library of Brazil and Instituto Rosa.
