About This Novel

Spike heard the knock on the door. Introduction to the work My name is Lin Shu, and I am a writer of suspense novels who is so desperate that he has to count three meals of instant noodles. Until I rented that ridiculously cheap apartment. When the old landlady handed me the key, she smiled meaningfully: "Young man, remember three rules - don't turn on the TV after three o'clock in the morning, don't chase a laughing cat, and most importantly... Never open the door when Spike knocks." I thought it was an old urban legend until my first night when the TV came on at exactly three in the morning. On the screen, the big blue cat was scratching the screen with its paws, grinning from the corner of its mouth to the base of its ears. The next night, a little brown mouse stood on the windowsill, holding a sign: "He's looking for you." On the third night, there was a knock on the door. It wasn't a gentle knock on the door, but a loud bang as if the whole door was about to be knocked open. I saw through the peephole-- A huge bulldog was standing outside the door, with a blood-stained scarf tied around its neck. Its eyes were empty and pure black, but it was grinning. "Game on, new resident," it said. Behind it, the corridor wall was densely covered with yellowed rental contracts, and the names of the residents on each contract were crossed out with red crosses. The last name, dated seven days ago. I finally understood that this apartment was not a cheap rental house at all-- It's Tom and Jerry's playground. And every so-called "rule" is a hunting clause that prey must abide by.
