About This Novel

When twenty-year-old Chen Nian was working part-time in a second-hand bookstore in a small southern town, he accidentally discovered a book of poems with faded letter paper between them. The letter contains the thoughts written by the girl Lin Wan to "Azhe". The yellowed handwriting hides the youthful love of the late 1990s - the stares at the library window, the companionship of the bicycle bell after night study, the unspoken confession, and a youth that ended in a hurry because of the college entrance examination application. Touched by the letter, Chen Nian began to search for traces of "Lin Wan" and "Azhe" in the city: the proprietress of the tailor shop in the old alley remembered the boy who always wore a white shirt, the retired teacher kept their borrowing records from that year, and there was another unsent reply letter lying in the bookstore owner's drawer. As the clues were put together, Chen Nian gradually discovered that this relationship buried by time contained struggles similar to his own - hesitation about dreams, timidity about separation, and the resonance behind the word "like" that spanned twenty years. When she finally met the gray-haired Lin Wan in the nursing home, the old man opened the photo album, pointed to the young man in the yellowed photo and said, "Later we met again at the class reunion, and he said that he actually understood the book of poems from back then." Chen Nian suddenly understood that "love" was never a perfect ending, but the chirping of cicadas on a summer afternoon, a crumpled piece of paper full of words, and the tenderness on the corner of the mouth with regret when he thought of it many years later.
