About This Novel

What he saw and heard on the battlefield of Solferino inspired Dunant to think deeply about human civilization, how humanity can be demonstrated, and how life can be respected. These thoughts prompted him to take further action. In order to prevent tragedies from happening again, he put forward landmark proposals: first, to establish "Volunteer Relief Associations to provide services for wartime wounded" in all countries; second, to formulate an "international norm recognized by an inviolable international convention" to recognize and support the work of these organizations. In 1863, Dunant and others founded the "International Committee for the Relief of Wounded Soldiers" within the Geneva Public Welfare Society. In 1880, it was renamed the "International Committee of the Red Cross". In order to commemorate Dunant, the great founder of the world Red Cross Movement, his birthday (May 8) was chosen as World Red Cross Day.
