This book is part of the Harvard Classics series, volume 18 - 'Modern British Drama'. The term 'modern' here refers to the author's contemporary era. It is now known as 'Classicism'. In his plays, John Dryden combines French dramatic structure with elaborate descriptions, also showing his influence from Shakespeare. 'All for Love' is a prime example of this blend, and Dryden's bold challenge to his idol, Shakespeare. As Professor Noyes notes, 'After seeing Shakespeare's 'Antony and Cleopatra', we can still find great enjoyment in Dryden's version of the story.'
