Northern Europe to the Left, America to the Right?
About This Novel
Finnish journalist Anu Partanen moved to the United States in 2008. She was originally a confident person with a successful career and a fulfilling social life, but soon after arriving in the United States, she became cautious and full of self-doubt. She found that everything in daily life here - from buying a mobile phone to filing tax returns for education and childcare - was more complex and stressful than back home in Northern Europe. At first, she attributed her severe anxiety to her difficulty adapting to her new, free environment. But as she got to know more Americans, she found that they were feeling just as stressed as she was. In order to understand why there are such big differences between the United States and Finland, she began to carefully observe the daily life of the two countries, focusing on the pros and cons of policy differences in politics, economy, culture, childcare and education, social welfare, medical care, gender relations, work tax systems, etc., And gave specific suggestions based on clear and detailed research. She clarified the common misunderstandings that Nordic countries have "big governments", "high taxes" and "welfare states support lazy people", pointing out that the principle of money supremacy in American society has resulted in greater risks and greater dependence in citizens' lives, and the cost of maintaining basic livelihood for ordinary people is also much higher than in Nordic countries. The Nordic lifestyle makes life more comfortable and free, and it also illustrates that the human desire for excellence is not as fragile and weak as the American belief in the profit motive suggests. Maybe there is more to life than money and this is consistent across the globe.
