Dream of the Sea
by Ba Jin
About This Novel
"Dream of the Sea" was written in the second year after the September 18th Incident, when Japan continued to accelerate its invasion of China, at a time of national crisis. Ba Jin constructed a strange fairy tale-like story in the novel, which seemed true and false, dreamlike and illusory, but truly reflected reality. The structure of the novel is unique. The first half, through the oral narration of the heroine Rina, reproduces the heroic feats of "Yang" and the child who led the island slaves to resist the invaders; the second half, through Rina's diary, shows her rich inner world.
